Two minutes still counts
A tiny session before snack is still piano. You do not owe ten minutes. Stop while it is still a good mood.
You will think you did not do piano because it was short. You did. They poked Cat. You said Cat. Then snack. That is a session.
Ten minutes is a full night when you have ten minutes. Two minutes is a full night when you have two. The fridge does not get a vote.
Short is the scale
ZERO TO THREE puts independent play at about five to six minutes at two, up to eight at three, and about ten at four. Those are already small numbers, and they are for play, not for a scored sit. A two-minute pass through the keys sits inside that world. It is not a failure to reach the ceiling.
CDC’s five-to-ten-minute focused-attention figure is a five-year milestone for stories and crafts, and screen time does not count toward it. It is not a target for a three-year-old at a browser piano. Treat it as a ceiling for seated focus later, if ever. Do not train toward it at snack time.
If you wait for a “real” block of time, you will wait until the weekend, and the weekend will have a birthday party. Two minutes before the water boils is the time you actually have.
What two minutes looks like
Open the page. No speech. Play Cat. Let them find it once. If they want Dog, Dog. If they walk away, close the tab. You are done.
You can sing one line of Twinkle and stop in the middle. Songs can be unfinished. Unfinished is how songs live in a house. You will sing the rest in the car.
On an iPad, tap keys. Safari will not talk to a MIDI cable. That still counts. On a cheap keyboard, one C with tape is enough. You do not need to decorate seven animals for a two-minute night. Cat is enough.
The American Academy of Pediatrics’ 5 Cs still apply when the session is tiny. You are there (Communication). You close it (Crowding Out does not get a chance). You do not hand the tablet over to end a storm (Calm). Two minutes of Cat with you is not an open device.
Do not make it up later
The urge will be to “add eight minutes after dinner” because two felt fake. That is how you get a fight at seven p.m. The two minutes already counted. After dinner can be blocks, or a bath, or nothing.
If they ask for more at a better hour, fine. That is a second session, not a repair of the first. NAfME’s play-based childhood includes unstructured bits. A tiny poke is unstructured. It does not owe you a song.
Leaving them wanting Cat is the method. Two minutes is very good at that. Ten minutes can be too, if the face is still good. Watch the face.
When two minutes is the wrong length
If they are already in a storm, do not open the page “for two minutes” as a plug. AAP is blunt: do not use a device as the only way to calm down. A tiny session is for a tiny good window, not for a rescue.
If they want to stay and you have to go, say so and close it. You can come back after snack. Coming back is allowed. Sitting still for the remaining eight is not required.
A night that looked like nothing
You were putting plates on the table. They wandered to the keyboard. You reached over and opened the page with one hand. Cat. Laugh. Close. Plates.
You will not remember it as a lesson. They will remember Cat, maybe. That is enough music for a Tuesday.
Two minutes still counts. Ten is not a quota. Stop while the mood is still good.
